What is a Fecal Immunochemical Test?
The National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society recommend that a FIT test should be taken annually starting from the age of 45. You should start annual screenings sooner if you are at an increased risk or have a family history.
The Fecal Immunochemical test looks for hidden (occult) blood in the stool. Larger colorectal polyps and cancers have blood vessels at their surface that are often fragile and easily damaged by the passage of feces. The damaged vessels usually release a small amount of blood into the feces too small to be seen by the naked eye. The FIT is able to detect trace amounts of blood in the stool with high accuracy. The presence of which indicates a possible large polyp or cancer.
